An English panel-stamp binding, ca. 1530. Light brown calfskin over slightly chamfered wooden boards with blind and panel-stamped decoration. Evidence of two clasps. Repaired (20th century?).

At the top of the title page, in an early 16th century hand, are the names Jo. Kernall and Ja. Penhal. Purchased in 1955 from W. H. Robinson, London.
Technical Description:
Sewn on three raised leather supports, with new endpapers on either side. Spine rounded and backed. Head- and tailbands worked in blue and natural thread. Ink title on fore-edge. Slight lap corners. Spine tied up. Clasps, now missing, hinged from the front board.

Decorative Description:
Upper cover: a four-saint panel — SS. Claude, Barbara, Katherine, and John the Evangelist — with the initials "GR" in the lower right panel. (Oldham QUAD.4). Lower cover: a horizontal panel of the Royal Arms with the legend around the panel, "Confitemini Domino quoniam bonus quoniam in seculum misericordia eius deus meus respice" (Psalms 106:1). This panel bears a nail mark on the right-hand side. Oldham HE.34 does not show nail marks. Both panels are framed by blind fillets.
Other Details:
The bookseller / binder G.R. who owned this pair of panels also owned a larger pair (Oldham QUAD.3 and HE.32). He was probably a Londoner. The panels are found on books printed between 1526 and 1535.
