Covering Material:
Dark brown calfskin rebacked with a lighter brown calfskin.
Sewing:
Sewn on four single raised tanned leather supports laced straight through the wooden boards.
Headbands:
Missing.
End Papers:
Printed waste end-papers: front papers with running title "The treatise against the feare of death." and back papers with running title "A fourme of prayer."
Closures:
Evidence of two fore-edge clasps hinging from the front cover and catching on the back. Only two decorative brass strap pins extant. Traces of rust on the back cover indicated that the catch plates were secured with iron nails.
Decorative Description:
Blind tooled with three panels. The frames are built of variable width triple line fillets. The outer panel is empty but the second panel is filled with the heads in medallion decorative roll (Oldham, plate L, HM. h(23) #848). In the center panel is a saltire panel that is also blind tooled with the same decorative roll. The spine (rebacked) is divided into five panels with the title gilt on a beige leather label in the second panel. The other panels are blind tooled with a tulip and lily stamp.
