Caricature of David Garrick being assaulted by representatives of Paris theatres and press in response to his 1765 visit. Garrick stands in the center, beset on all sides. Clockwise from bottom left: a man holds a bucket of water, poised to throw at Garrick, "Les variétés" inscribed beneath his feet; a seated man, crouched over a sketch he is making of Garrick, "Les artistes" inscribed above his head; a woman stands directly behind Garrick and pulls his hair, "L'opéra comique" inscribed above her head; a dog is tugging at the tails of Garrick's coat, "Les journalistes" inscribed beneath; a man dressed as a Roman centurion has a dagger poised over Garrick's chest, "Les Français" inscribed above his head; a boy is poised to throw a rock at Garrick, at his feet are two slips of paper which read "J.J. Rousseau" and "Voltaire", "La jeunesse" inscribed beneath him.
