Condition reviewed rectangular crack is just to the left of this at the center top of panel. Another vertical crack runs from the top edge to Kemble's right knee, roughly paralleling the edge of the right-hand side of the tent opening. A smaller crack is at the upper left, 2 1/2 inches from the left-hand edge

Versions: A small version is in the Dyce Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Another was in the collection of the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre before it was sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, 15 January 1976, lot 107. It is now in a private collection in California (see Geoffrey Ashton "Paintings in the Mander and Mitchenson Theatre Collection," Apollo 114 [August 1981], p. 92, n. 5)
