Notes (Hamnet):
Artist: Several of the images in this watercolor are taken from engravings by Stothard but they are more crudely drawn than the engravings and in general this drawing lacks the control and technique one would expect from the hand of Stothard. Watercolor is probably after Stothard rather than by him.

Notes (Hamnet):
History: Two sets of figures in the drawing can be related directly to Stothard engravings. The figures in the trees in the background at left are lifted from an illustration to Love's labour's lost, act IV, sc. 3 (see ART File S528l1 no. 29), and the figures of Rosalind and Celia at right are taken from an engraving of As you like it, act II, sc. 4 (see ART File S528a4 no. 28). Both were used to illustrate an 1826 edition of Shakespeare's works published by Pickering (PR 2752 1826a1 copy 1 Sh. Col.).
