Gilt b-Gilt e

  1. Gilt border comprised of a 6mm wide roll with alternating curved triangular forms resulting in elliptical negative space (#172, Maggs Bro. Bookbinding in the British Isles), inside this roll border is a gilt border comprised of a repeated pattern of four tools, a small diamond tool surrounded by pointille, a floret sprig, a pointille floret, rose on stem with two leaves, in the four corners is an individual forget-me-not on stem. The spine is divided into six panels with SHAKESPEARE in the second, and at the bottom of the 6th in very large numbers the date 1623 both framed with curved laurel sprigs. The tops surface of the double bands are tooled with the same wide roll used on the covers as are the edges and squares of the boards. The rest of the spine panels are filled with a diaper pattern of a solid diamond tool framed in pointille, and an unusual ornate rectangular floral band. (2)

  5. Gilt decoration of single lozenges composed of small tools around a concentric circle center stamp, in a semé pattern within a ornamental border of fern tip, and a acanthus leaf between wave decorative rolls. In the center of both covers are the initials TH. The smooth spine is similarly decorated in a long panel, with the exception of the RT initials on the spine. There has been later gilding done where leather repairs had been made, resulting in a much brighter gold color. (1)
  6. gilt double line fillet along the decorative paper. Spine tooled with a gilt variable width double line above and below the bands and at the top and bottom panel. Gold tooled in the second panel on a black goatskin label SHAKESPEARE, at the bottom of the sixth panel the date 1623 (3)
  7. Gilt double line fillet border with Oxford corners. The arms of Michael Wodhull are gold tooled on the front cover. The spine is divided into six large and one small panels divided by gilt double line fillets. In the second and third panel are onlaid green labels gilt with the author and title, and date. The board edge is gilt with a pointille and dot roll. The turn-in squared are blind tooled with guilloche roll. (1)
