Sewn on three h-Sewn on three r

  1. Sewn on three heavy dark brown leather straps cut flush to the width of the spine. Substantial amounts of animal glue on the flat spine. Two sheets of plain paper wrapped around the text block are held in place by tacketing and form the two pastedowns (now partly free). Cover, made "off the book," consisting of two pieces of pulp board. The larger piece forms the fore-edge flap, lower cover, spine, and half the upper cover. The rest of the upper cover is made from a smaller board. Where they overlap the deckled and tapered edges are used to form a flat surface. All turn-ins are edge-pared with lap corners. Fore-edge flap and spine reinforced with wide strips of vellum manuscript. Three leather overbands, the strap (now partly missing), and buckle support are lined with vellum and held in place by tawed and vellum lacing. Text block and pastedowns securely fastened to the case by nine tawed tackets, three on each overband. They pass behind the sewing supports, through the cover and overbands, and are then tied off. Two paper labels on the spine. (2)
  2. sewn on three hemp cord supports (1)
  3. Sewn on three hemp cord supports laced straight through the paste-boards. (3)
  4. Sewn on three hemp cord supports. (2)
  5. Sewn on three linen tapes with printed textile pastedown and made endleaf designed by "Huloo" (signed on back pastedown). Rounded and backed spine. Head-edge of text block gilt. Headand tailbands worked with linen thread which has been painted. Orange and green bookmark. Vellum case with a French joint. Lap corners. (1)
  6. Sewn on three raised alum-tawed thongs which are further reinforced (stiffened) with thin strips of brass placed across each thong. First and last sections sewn with a vellum hook (a contemporary manuscript of notes in German and Latin) forming pastedowns. Text block trimmed after sewing with a plane or other tool leaving deep diagonal gouges across all edges. Fore-edge retains yellow coloring. Vellum wrapper cut with a fore-edge flap folded back on itself, with head and tail squares. Tapered slips laced through slits in the heavy vellum cover. The title and date have been written in ink on the spine. (7)
  7. Sewn on three raised alum-tawed thongs, laced through the case. Single endpaper and pastedowns on either side. Slightly rounded spine. Gilt edges. Pieces of velvet put clown onto a thin sheet of pulp board underneath corresponding cut-outs in the vellum covers. Case turn-ins drummed on. Evidence of two blue textile fore-edge ties. (3)
  8. Sewn on three raised alum-tawed thongs. Two endpapers and pastedowns. Rounded spine with fiat fore-edge. Gilt edges. Endbands worked in gold and light blue thread. Vellum cover drummed on over thin sheets of pulp board. Lap corners. Remnants of two gold silk fore-edge ties. (5)
  9. Sewn on three raised cords. Single endpapers and pastedowns. Rounded and backed spine. Dark green and red sprinkled edges. Remnants of four textile ties (two at fore-edge, one at head and tail). (2)
  10. Sewn on three raised cords; only the outer two are laced into the board. Two plain endpapers with separate pastedowns. Spine rounded with slight backing. Edges gilt. Red and white linen head- and tailbands sewn over cane core. Lap corners. (2)
  11. Sewn on three raised double alum-tawed(?) supports. Strips of vellum manuscript reinforce the inner and outer folds of the first section. New endpapers and pastedowns (20th-century). Both boards cut flush to the fore-edge of the text block with squares head and tail, and deep bevels at the joints. Tawed pigskin covering (now darkened) cut with tongue corners and headcaps made over core. Spine tied up. Upper cover brass fittings include: four decorated brass corner bosses with edge guards, a round center boss with floral collar, a brass skid (fragmentary) attached to the top edge of the board (this and the two upper corner bosses have remnants of dark brown leather caught underneath them), a handwritten title plaque protected under horn and framed in rolled brass, with evidence of an earlier, larger plaque, plus two decorated brass catch plates. Fittings on the lower cover include: four corner guards, evidence of five round bosses, and two leather hasp straps (new) supporting decorated hasps, held in place by brass strap plates. The six-link iron chain is attached to the top edge by an iron clip held in place by two rivets. All three edges of the text block have been colored red, sometime after binding. (1)
  12. Sewn on three raised double cords laced through the thick wooden boards. (3)
  13. Sewn on three raised double cords. Evidence of single front endpaper, which had been folded in a hook guard around the first section, and remains of a pastedown. The back endpaper is intact; the pastedown has been trimmed out on the board. Rounded spine, with naturally formed backing, lined with vellum between the sewing supports. Remains of fore-edge leather tabs throughout text. Pink and natural linen thread endbands, worked over a tawed core(?). Boards given slight inside bevel on three edges with an exterior bevel at the joint. Recesses have been cut on the lower board to receive hasp straps (now missing); two small scoops on the fore-edge of the upper board were cut for the catch plates (also missing). Head- and tailcaps slit to accommodate endbands. Lapmitered corners. Evidence of a central boss and four edge guard corner bosses on both boards. (3)
  14. Sewn on three raised double cords. Single endpapers and pastedowns reinforced with linen (20th century). Rounded spine with shoulders. Vellum spine liners cut from one single piece of printer's waste; removed and kept at back of book (20th century). Boards beveled on inside edges, shaped and beveled at joint, and on outer edges. Stuck-on head- and tailbands worked in blue, pink, and white thread over a vellum core and brought over onto outer surface of the board. Head- and tailcaps slit to accommodate head- and tailbands. Mitered corners. Ink inscription on fore-edge. (4)
  15. Sewn on three raised leather supports, with new endpapers on either side. Spine rounded and backed. Head- and tailbands worked in blue and natural thread. Ink title on fore-edge. Slight lap corners. Spine tied up. Clasps, now missing, hinged from the front board. (1)
  16. Sewn on three raised leather supports. Endpapers and pastedowns with vellum manuscript hinged reinforcements. Spine rounded. Lap corners. Evidence of two leather fore-edge ties. (1)
  17. Sewn on three raised leather thongs. Endpapers of printer's waste reinforced by vellum manuscript strips (back endpapers now missing). Rounded spine with backing re-emphasized (probably at time of repair). Tongue corners cut on the boards, which have been slightly cushioned; deep lacing channels visible on the back board. Single clasp with hasp (now missing) hinged from the front board by vellum-lined leather strap; catch plate remains in place. (2)
  18. Sewn on three raised red alum-tawed slit thongs, with each section reinforced at the inner fold by narrow strips of vellum. Endleaves and pastedowns of vellum (flesh side uppermost). Spine rounded and backed. Endbands worked over a tawed(?) core, with primary sewing of linen thread, tied down through every other section (approx.). Narrow straps of red and white tawed skin have been worked in a braided style over the top of both endbands and through the spine of the covering material previously cut flush with the endbands. Boards deeply cushioned on outer surfaces. Tongue corners. Spine tied up. Both covers show evidence of clasps with hasps hinged by leather straps from the lower board. (4)
  19. Sewn on three raised slit al tim-tawed straps with the front endleaves wrapped around the first section and given strips of vellum manuscript reinforcement. Flat spine with slight natural backing with leather linings set between the sewing supports. Compound endbands worked over a red alum-tawed core with primary sewing of linen thread; tied down through the leather lining at every other section. Secondary sewing worked in blue, yellow, and pink(?) with two supplementary thread cores running across the top and bottom of the previous sewing. Each board given inside bevel and laced on through channels cut off-center. The slips are held in place by two wooden pegs. The exposed covering leather is somewhat darker than the turn-ins. Tongue corners cut on the board. The headcap has been slit to accommodate endbands. (The tailcap is new.) One round brass boss remains in place on the upper cover with evidence of four others. Four of five bosses remain on the lower cover (the nail head of the missing boss is now visible). Three star rivets hold remnants of textile hasp straps, one at the head and tail and two at the fore-edge (one rivet is missing from the top strap). Each of the four triangular catch plates, with feathered decoration, on the lower cover is held in place by four pins with rounded raised heads. Author's name written in ink on fore-edge. (1)
