Two fore-edge clasps with double rows of text catching on the front board. The catch plates and strap plates are original, hasps and straps replaced.
Decorative Description: 
Both volumes are blind tooled with panel designs created with a variable width triple line fillet. The front of volume one and the back of volume two are similar. The outer panels are filled with a palm heart stamp, then the next panel is filled with a small rhombus stamp with spread winged bird. The next panel is filled with an assortment of with large round rosettes and and "ave maria" band stamp and four lobe rosettes. The next panel is filled with a five petal rosettes. The center panel is filled with a berry in a rhombus stamp. The back of volume one and the front of volume two are tooled in a panel design. Both outer panels are filled with the palm heart stamp. The back of volume one has a square stamp of a bird with a script ribbon in its talons (symbol of St. John the Evangelist (cf. Kyriss 27, and Schwenke-Schunke Evangelisten-Symbole 3a. "Augsburg Schwinck-Meister"). In the next panel, volume 2 is filled with "ave maria" band stamp. The third panel of volume one is filled with a double headed eagle rhombus stamp while volume two is filled with large round rosettes. The center of both are compartmentalized, volume one with rosettes, volume two has a pomegranate in a rhombus stamp and a crossed ribbon stem floret. There is a paper label with handwritten author name and title on front cover of each volume. Volume one has a sewn leather repair on the back cover corner.
