Fore-edge inscription "Valeri[us]" reading from top to bottom; another inscription of author name and title on lower edge, reading from fore-edge to spine.
End Papers: 
Vellum board liner still adhered to the front board, detached on the back board.
Closures: 
Two fore-edge clasps catching on the back cover. Catch plates extant on the back cover. Straps (missing) were secured with three nails still extant (no strap plate). Evidence of a chain fastening on the top edge of the front board.
Decorative Description: 
The binding is blind tooled to a panel design with a double line fillet. The center panel divided into diced pattern. At each intersection there is a small rondel with six petals. Each lozenge is filled with circular stamps with symbols of the four Evangelists. The spine is divided into five panels, has later tooling. The author and title are blind tooled in the second panel and there are double gilt lines above and below the bands and at the head and tail. In the center of each panel is a trifoliate fleuron. In the third panel over the fleuron is paper label with pencilled shelfmark "M6", in the bottom panel partially covering the fleuron is another printed paper label with "N*5, 12".
