A velvet binding for Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, with silver gilt furniture, ca. 1570. Maroon velvet over pasteboards with silver gilt corner and center plates and hinged clasps. Rebacked with leather (20th century).

The resewing is on recessed supports. Endpapers, pastedowns, and head- and tailbands are all 20th century. The spine is slightly rounded.

FURNITURE: Square corner plates delicately engraved with a flower design and rosettes. Upper cover: oval center plate with engraved crest of the Earl of Oxford. Lower cover: oval center plate with ribbon around a coronet on a quartered pointed shield with a five-pointed star in the upper left corner. Clasps of unusual design. Both front and back hinges have identical stylized acanthus leaf. Front hinges attach to a 20 mm wide x 70 mm long strap of silver with a small post mounted 10 mm from the end. Back hinges bear a shorter version, 25 mm long, with a hole to lit neatly over the post. Both straps have a convex curvature probably made to insure a tighter fit.
