Other Details:
This fine binding is very reminiscent of the style of John Fletcher, who took up his freedom in 1653 and took an apprentice in 1671. It reflects Fletcher's subtle use of color, seen for instance on the Book of Common Prayer, 1638, formerly at Chatsworth (Nixon, English Restoration Bookbindings, no. 52), and repeats the shape of Fletcher's "cottageroof" panel, as on the binding of Upton's De Studio Militari, 1654, with Charles II's arms (Davenport, Samuel Mearne, pl. 15; identified as by Fletcher by H.M. Nixon in The Book Collector, 1956, p. 54). But none of the tools on this binding can be found on Fletcher's identified work, and we must be content with attributing it to an imitator.
