Technical Description:
Sewn on four raised slit alum-tawed straps with vellum reinforcing strips at the center of each section. Printer's waste pastedowns and vellum reinforcements wrapped around the two endpapers. Flat spine. Endbands of a primary sewing and secondary chevron plait, all worked in linen thread. Two decorated catch plates and hasps hinged with new leather straps from the lower cover.
415 x 298 x 47 mm
Decorative Description:
Two- and three-line fillets form borders and compartments, with a saltire central panel. On the upper cover, the top and bottom compartments are tooled with a double-headed eagle roundel and a seated monkey holding a mirror or fruit. The top compartment also contains a crowned "M" with the letters "u. a. r." (virgo Maria). Surrounding the central panel are repeated toolings of a mythical bird and a unicorn lozenge. The monkey stamp, with the mythical bird lozenge, also appears in the outermost compartments on either side of the cover. The eagle roundel occupies the four square compartments. Rosettes are placed at each end of the saltire and at its center. The lower cover, divided in a similar manner but with a larger central panel, is decorated with a completely different set of tools used to much the same visual effect as those on the upper cover. They consist of a rosette, a swan roundel, eagle and lion lozenges. Faint contemporary inked inscription on upper cover.
