Decorative Description:
The covers are gilt and blind tooled with an outer border tooled with back to back blind tooled decorative tulip rolls with a gilt triple line fillet in-between stopped at the corners with a star rosette. The inner frame of a geometrical band is blind tooled with an intertwining ribbon roll, stopped at the corners with a star rosette, tooled around, in-between and outside a double single gilt line fillet frame that is stopped at the intersections with a gilt dot. In the indentations of the frame are panels, rounded at the ends with ovals, filled with gilt quatrefoils and a dotted ground. The spine is divided into six panels by five false double raised bands that have a gilt laurel branch on a pointille arc decorative roll gilt in-between, and a gilt single line fillet tooled on top of the bands. The title is gilt in the second panel. The top and bottom panels are tooled in the center with a gilt four pointed star design with arches at the corners that is tooled with a star flower tool, circles, on a fine pin-dot ground. Surrounded by blind tooled lily stamps and other tools that appear to be from the Payne bindery. The other panels are tooled with a different gilt geometrical center design again surrounded by blind tooled stamps. The board edges are gilt with a single line fillet. The turn-ins and inner joint are likewise gilt and blind tooled with stamps from the Payne bindery, and with the technical feature common to Payne bindings the corners have a thin leather covering the mitered corners prior to tooling.
