Light green and pink silk thread with a front bead sewn over a reed core.
Gilt and gauffered.
Two blank paper flyleaves and a single combed marble paper and paste-down.
Cover ground fabric is white silk satin in good condition with minimal wear and discoloration. Discoloration of ground fabric and remaining pin pricks suggest spangles were applied throughout the design, few of which remain. The central design is a symmetrical arch surrounded by roses and birds worked in polychrome silks and metal threads embellished with spangles. The same design is on the back and front covers. The spine is a repeat of four blocks of flowers, alternating daisies and tulips. The overall condition of the needlework is good, with some wearing typical to raised work pieces. The front cover has birds in each top corner worked in red, yellow, white and blue flat silk in long and short stitches. The stitching is worn off on most of the body. There are pin holes outlining the shapes where there were couched metal thread coiled thread (evident from back cover remains). Despite being worn, the colors are vibrant. Nine rosettes surround the arch design. The rosettes are coiled metal thread worked in silver gilt bullion over a polychromatic core. The top of the arch is worked in straight silver guilt bullion stitches, with a wavy underneath accent of couched flat plate outlined in couched coiled wire of silver gilt. The side columns of the arch are worked in white and silk flat silk satin stiches with a pattern of overlaid double lines of silver gilt bullions in regular intervals. The base of the arch design is supported by potted rosettes on each side, the base of the pot is worked in couched silver gilt threads over polychrome silk cores and straight flat silk stitches in green radiating from the top of the mound. The center of the arch is a sweet pea flower flanked symmetrically by a leaf and pea pod on either side. The sweet pea petal is worked in white flat silk straight stitches split with blue flat silk, with silver gilt highlighting straight stitches, the base is worked in black, white and yellow flat silk in straight stitches. The flower is outlined in couched coiled silver gilt. The leaves are worked in green flat silk and silver guilt thread in trellis stitch with a large silver gilt bullion over the center and outlined in couched coiled silver gilt. The pea pods are worked in green flat silk and silver gilt thread in trellis stitch with a large silver gilt bullion over the center and outlined in couched coiled silver gilt. The peas are worked in yellow flat silk in straight stitches. The calyx of the flower and pea pods are worked in silver gilt bullion. Under the sweet pea is a three petal tulip flower worked in white, pink, and yellow flat silk thread in long and short stitches, silver gilt overlays and outlined in couched coiled silver gilt. The base of the petals are worked in silver gilt bullions. The spine has a design of four blocks each with a single flower in the center. The top is an eight petal marigold, each petal is worked in gold and yellow straight stitches, the center is a coiled silver gilt bullion. The second is a three petal tulip worked in white, pink, and yellow flat silk thread in long and short stitches, silver gilt overlays and outlined in couched coiled silver gilt. The base of the petals are worked in silver gilt bullions. The third is the same marigold as the first. The fourth is a three petal tulip worked in white and blue flat silk thread in long and short stitches, silver gilt overlays and outlined in couched coiled silver gilt. The base of the petals are worked in silver gilt bullions. There is a single spangle remaining in the second tulip box, suggesting additional spangles throughout which may have been removed or worn away. The back cover is the same design and treatment as the front cover. The condition is a little more vibrant in color and more of the original stitching remains, such as the parrots in the corners.
