Decorative Description:
The panel within a frame of triple fillets shows a female figure with her hands folded across her breast beholding a cross in the clouds, adjoined by the words "Meritum Chisti." At her left shoulder is "Spes," from which the panel takes its name, and she stands on a pedestal inscribed "Fides," with "Charitas" next to the pedestal on the left. On the panel is a passage in Latin from Psalm 70. The surrounding legend reads: "QUONIAM IN ME SPERAVIT LIBERABO EUM PROTEGAM EUM QUO- PSAL. 90" (Because he had hope in me I will deliver him and protect him). There are four variants of this panel: two signed "I P" (as here), two signed "I B."
