Decorative Description:
Gilt border comprised of a 6 mm wide roll with alternating curved triangular forms resulting in elliptical negative space (#172, Maggs Bro. Bookbinding in the British Isles), inside this roll border is a gilt border comprised of a repeated pattern of four tools, a small diamond tool surrounded by pointille, a floret sprig, a pointille floret, rose on stem with two leaves, in the four corners is an individual forget-me-not on stem. The spine is divided into six panels with SHAKESPEARE in the second, and at the bottom of the 6th in very large numbers the date 1623 both framed with curved laurel sprigs. The tops surface of the double bands are tooled with the same wide roll used on the covers as are the edges and squares of the boards. The rest of the spine panels are filled with a diaper pattern of a solid diamond tool framed in pointille, and an unusual ornate rectangular floral band.
