Decorative Description:
Tooled to a triple panel design of single line fillets the inner most ended with a 3 barbed point, a crescent, a harp (Lyre), and drawer handle curved Vandyked (Davenport) is placed at angles. The center design is comprised of an acorn tool within an oak leaf, flanked by small sprigs of oak leaves, the arms of Shakespeare's family on the sides, and the bottom scalloped at the head and tail with a floriated arch at the center, below the scalloped curves the space is filled with a twelve leaf laurel, rosette (four lobed) pointille, stars and dots. The spine divided into seven panels, the top and bottom filled with tools used on the covers, the Shakespeare arms in the center of each. The other panels lettered with SHAKESPEARS in the second panel, COMEDIES HISTORIES & TRAGEDIES in the third, THE FIRST EDITION in the fourth, PUBLISHED HEMINGE & CONDELL in the fifth LONDON MDCXXIII in the sixth. The inner squares of the boards are tooled with the acorn within an oak leaf tool repeated 14 times with a conventional letter D tool at the corners, the harp (lyre) surrounded by sprigs and Mullets are centered along the edges. A crescent tool within a sun tool surrounded by mullets and oak leaves are centered at the head and tail. The edges of the boards are tooled with a single line fillet ended with barbed points, the corner edges tooled with a diagonal lined roll.
