Technical Description:
Sewn on three raised double alum-tawed(?) supports. Strips of vellum manuscript reinforce the inner and outer folds of the first section. New endpapers and pastedowns (20th-century). Both boards cut flush to the fore-edge of the text block with squares head and tail, and deep bevels at the joints. Tawed pigskin covering (now darkened) cut with tongue corners and headcaps made over core. Spine tied up. Upper cover brass fittings include: four decorated brass corner bosses with edge guards, a round center boss with floral collar, a brass skid (fragmentary) attached to the top edge of the board (this and the two upper corner bosses have remnants of dark brown leather caught underneath them), a handwritten title plaque protected under horn and framed in rolled brass, with evidence of an earlier, larger plaque, plus two decorated brass catch plates. Fittings on the lower cover include: four corner guards, evidence of five round bosses, and two leather hasp straps (new) supporting decorated hasps, held in place by brass strap plates. The six-link iron chain is attached to the top edge by an iron clip held in place by two rivets. All three edges of the text block have been colored red, sometime after binding.
