Along the edges of the band motif is a dotted gauffered line and between the petals are small fleurons. Other Details:
Pier Donato Cesi graduated in civil and canon law at Ferrara. He was appointed Bishop of Narni, 1546; President of the Romagna in 1556, with headquarters at Ravenna where he undertook major public works; Vice-Legate in Bologna and effectively Governor of Emilia, 1560; Cardinal, 1570, and Legate in Bologna, 1580. He was a man of scholarly tastes who formed a library and collected coins and ancient marbles. This book has been thoroughly expurgated, probably in preparation for the second edition printed in 1580. The arabesque cornerpieces, derived via France from Ottoman art, are of a type that enjoyed a short vogue in Rome. Examples can be found on bindings with the arms of Pope Gregory XIII (r. 1572-1585) and of his natural son, Giacomo Boncompagni.
