Other Details:
Francis Bedford's obituary in The Athenaeum for June 16, 1883 stressed "that Francis Bedford had no capacity for design whatever and that all his exhibition pieces were copies of sixteenth- and seventeenth century bindings." Be that as it may, it is clear that Bedford also responded to the new tastes in Gothic art and produced stylized Elizabethan bindings to capture the interest of his clients. For more on Francis Bedford see 14:3.
