Other Details:
The Italians were given to attaching head and tail clasps as well as those at the fore-edge. The practice appears to have been part of a long tradition and to have outlasted any real functional purpose. FURNITURE: Head-, tail-, and fore-edge clasps, hinged from the upper cover by alum-tawed straps stained red. Hasp at the head-edge is the only one to survive and is made from a single strip of folded brass, embellished with delicate feathering and two decorative holes. It is secured by two brass pins. Lower cover bears the three catch plates, decorated with feathering and three holes. Each is held in place by four brass pins. Six other pins suggest a vellum title plaque (no longer in place).
