Other Details:
Francis Bedford (1800-1884) worked for the binder Charles Lewis and, from the time of Lewis's death in 1836 until 1841, Bedford managed the shop. In 1841 he was taken into partnership with John Clark with whom he worked until 1850. Assisted financially by the Duke of Devonshire, he set up on his own and became particularly noted for his sound craftsmanship and imitation of earlier styles. Many of the tools used on this binding, the columbine, forget-me-not, and lily, are copies of those used by Roger Payne.
