Notes (Hamnet):
Condition reviewed There is the remnant of an inscription under the lining fabric: "In Examination of the Recruits by / Justice and Shallow in Interior / by Sir John Falstaff / 2 Part of King Henry 4th / Carente [?] J. Cawse 1818." The ground consists of a thin, coarse off-white gesso. Preliminary drawing on the gesso ground is visible in the floor and back wall. The underdrawing is in blue, and the lines often do not correspond to the stonework as completed. The paint layer has been thinly applied, and there is considerable abrasion, particularly at the top and bottom. The paint film was prepared with an excess of oil, leading to shrinkage and the appearance of nondirectional, linked rifts in the dark colors. There is old damage located just behind Francis Feeble's left hand. The other versions make clear that he was holding a scissors, although the handles of the scissors, falling in the damaged area, are now lost

E. Parsons & Sons, Fine Art Dealers in Books, Prints and Paintings, 45 Brompton Rd., London SW3 [1927]; Fine Art Book and Print Sellers and Picture Dealers [1926 and 1929]; Fine Art Book and Print Sellers and Dealers in Pictures and Original Drawings by the Old Masters [1929], January 1930, £31.10.0, as a scene from The Merry Wives of Windsor. (This misidentification may have been deliberate, since Parsons had already sold a painting by Cawse of this subject to Folger. An old photograph with this identification can be found in ART File S528klb, no. 57.)

Versions: In 1818 Cawse exhibited this same scene at the Society of Painters in Water Colours (no. 134). The catalogue entry reads, "Sir John Falstaff examining his Recruits / Falstaff. What trade art thou? Feeble. A Woman's tailor, sir. / Second Part of King Henry the Fourth." Another version, closest to the Yale version (B1975.5.22), was sold at Sotheby, London, 16 May 1984, lot 212, repr., incorrectly identified as "Pistol announcing to Sir John Falstaff the Death of King Henry IV." It was signed and dated 1819 and measured 24 by 29 1/2 inches.
