Condition reviewed it appears that at some time the bottom edge of the original canvas was folded back about two inches and used as a tacking edge. Olin wrote in 1985, "The design of the impasto underneath does not coincide with the present painting, indicating there may be an entire painting beneath." This seems unlikely, but there are passages where pentimenti are clearly visible, demonstrating that certain details have been altered. For example, the legs of the stool have been thinly painted over those of the sleeping guard at left so that a double image is now present
