Louis A. D'Aras, 9 W. 14th St., New York, apparently shortly before 13 February 1929, when the following heading appears in the case listings for no. 1880: "Papers to go with Sully: Kemble as Lear," $325.
Signed (signature now scratched out) and dated "1874" beneath Lear's left shoulder.
Condition reviewed the canvas suffers from several complex tears. Much of the impasto in the head and straw was flattened in an early lining, and early work on the canvas also resulted in areas of abrasion and crude overpainting
Conserved 19760000 work was relined, the old repaint removed, and new inpainting introduced to harmonize with the original paint
