The verso of the board bore the following pencil notations, upper left corner: '1426' ; center in orange pencil: 16x20 ; bottom center: Heineman/col/as others/Rec 7 July/wd 17 July ; bottom left: 2/9947 ; bottom right: 9. Signed in ink on recto, lower right. Xerox of the annotations on the removed backing is in the archival record file in the Catalog Office.

History: Drawing was executed as an illustration to the 1908 edition of Midsummer night's dream, published by William Heinemann in London and Doubleday in New York. It appeared as a three-color reproduction, tipped on to a leaf facing p.132. The reproduction measured 7 x 4 15/16 in. Drawing was exhibited along with Rackham's other illustrations for this edition, at Leicester Galleries in London, 1908 and in the Folger travelling exhibit 'Shakespeare, the Globe and the World' 1979-1982 (reproduced on p.152 of the catalog).
