Notes (Hamnet):
History: The only item pertaining to Midsummer Night's Dream listed in the Reid Catalogue of Cruikshank's Work is a woodcut, no.3564, which was designed by Cruikshank and engraved by T. Wright. The woodcut is a vignette and Reid notes that it was executed by Wright as a specimen of his craft, but never published. FSL has a copy of the woodcut (ART Vol. c87, no.15a) and this sketch may have been a preliminary design for the vignette. It is also possible that this was a preliminary sketch for a picture from MSND which Cruikshank exhibited at RA in 1853.
Notes (Hamnet):
On the verso is a ms. letter which is dated Aug.9 1851 (or 1857, the top of the paper being cut off).

Provenance: This item, along with ART Box C955 no.55 and 56, was purchased from the sale of the collection of Samuel Henry Austin, held by the American Art Association, April 23-24, 1917. According to the catalog of the sale the item was originally part of a bound volume of Cruikshank drawings, formerly owned by John B. Gough and purchased, by Austin, from the collection of C.D. Borden. Drawings were no.353, 362, 366 in the catalog of the Austin collection.
