Artist: Two of the items were formerly attributed, by the bookseller, to J.M.W. Turner. These items bear no resemblance to Turner's work but are closely allied to the work of J.M. Wright (see entry under Wright for 'Scene from King Henry IV, pt. 2 or Merry wives' for more details).

Provenance: ART Box W951 no.146 was purchased by the Folgers from E. Parsons & Sons, Feb., 1927 (Case 1651). ART Box W951 no.147,149 were formerly part of ART Inventory 289 (no.118,114), see entry under Wright for 'Masquerade' for provenance information. ART Box W951 no.148 was purchased by Mr. Folger from John Anderson Jr. in January of 1921. Anderson attributed the work to J.M.W. Turner (Case 922). ART Box W951 no.150 was also purchased from Anderson as being the work of Turner, for further provenance information see record under Wright for 'Scene from King Henry IV, pt. 2 or Merry wives' (Case 1035).

Subject: All five items picture Romeo beneath the balcony of Juliet. Juliet is shown leaning over the balcony railing. In two of the drawings Romeo is standing on the limbs of a tree (ART Box W951 no.146,147), in the other three he is standing on the ground.

Two of the items have been glued to backings and have the play title labeled in pencil in the lower right corner of their backings. The other three items have been removed from backings and two are labeled on the versos. Four of the items are done in watercolor and one is a grey wash. The wash drawing has a pencil sketch of Falstaff fighting on its verso (ART Box W951 no.150). None of the items are signed.
