Notes (Hamnet):
Collection title devised by cataloger.
Notes (Hamnet):
History: The scene from Hamlet is illustrated by Wright, in much the same manner but in a smaller version, in ART Vol. d98 no.1. That item has been cataloged under Wright as part of the 'Illustrations to Shakespeare - small rectangle series'. A watercolor similar to the illustration to the Romeo and Juliet painting may be found in another Wright series of 'Illustrations to Shakespeare - large vignette paintings' (ART Box W951 no.55).
Notes (Hamnet):
Items were formerly glued into mats, which have since been removed. On the versos of the mats were pencil notations: '89' and 'Hamlet' on one and '90' and 'M' on the other. On the recto of the mat which held the drawing for Romeo and Juliet was a penciled note 'Pair noce [?]'. The Hamlet scene measures 10 1/8 x 7 3/4 in., the Romeo and Juliet scene 9 7/8 x 7 5/8. Neither item is signed.
Notes (Hamnet):
Provenance: Items were purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros., August, 1927.
Notes (Hamnet):
Subject: The first item illustrates Hamlet, Act V, Sc. 1, the graveyard scene (ART Box W951 no.152). Hamlet stands, holding a skull in his right hand. Horatio stands behind him. The Gravedigger is at work and a church can be seen in the background. The second item illustrates Romeo and Juliet Act II, Sc. 6. Romeo and Juliet stand with clasped hands as the Friar beckons them to follow him through an arched doorway.
