Notes (Hamnet):
Condition reviewed 19880000 Elizabeth Steele wrote at time of restoration: "During cleaning, it became apparent that damage to the paint film was severe and pervasive throughout the picture. In some areas, certain elements of the composition appeared rough and sketchy after the varnish and old restorations were removed. The sketchiness in these areas strongly resembles under painting which may suggest that the artist never fully completed the picture, whereas, other parts of the composition emerged after cleaning as quite complete. For this reason it may be postulated that this picture was actually never finished by the artist, perhaps because of the large cracks which developed by using a slow drying paint such as bitumen. A continuation of the history of the painting may be that someone at a later date finished the picture some years after the artist had put it aside unfinished ... Complete removal of all of the old restorations was not carried out because so little of the original paint was found extant"
