Artist: Hall was an American artist, born in Boston and residing in New York. He travelled a great deal in Europe and was known as a painter of flowers and genre subjects. He was a member of the American National Academy and exhibited a the Royal Academy 1858-1874. His genre subjects were often Shakespearean and two paintings illustrative of Twelfth Night, which are credited to Hall, hang in the Folger Bond Reading Room.

History: The studies were done for a portrait which was given by Hall to the Royal Shakepeare Theatre Picture Gallery and is listed in their 1970 catalog as no.2, Ideal portrait of Shakespeare. Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 in. signed and dated 1896. The portrait is 3/4 length and shows Shakespeare looking upwards to left, seated at a table, pen in hand. It was presented in 1901.

Provenance: Sketches were purchased by Folger from Jennie Brownscombe in January of 1916 along with a replica of the portrait which was also painted by Hall. The replica was sold by the Folger library to Lois Marder of Kent State University in March of 1964. Formerly in Art Inventory 322, cs.777.

The first study, dated Feb. 3, 1896 shows Shakespeare to right and looking slightly off to right. He wears a beard and moustache. The portrait is labeled with a quotation from The tempest: 'The cloud capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces ... shall disolve ...' The second study is dated Feb. 13, 1896 and shows Shakespeare to right, looking upward to left. There is no quotation on the second study. Both are signed and Roma is written above the signature and the date.
