History: Drawing appeared as a three-color reproduction tipped on to a leaf of the 1926 Heinemann/Doubleday edition of The tempest. The edition was issued in a limited and a trade edition. The reproduction measured 7 x 5 in. Drawing was also reproduced in the Folger Library edition of Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare. 1979, on p.11.

Provenance: Drawing was purchased by the Folgers from Alwin J. Scheuer, a New York rare book dealer, Sept. 26, 1929. Scheuer's letter accompanying the item describes it as 'a watercolor drawing which I have just received from Mr. Rackham'. It is published under the title 'Strange Shapes' and is the last original drawing for The tempest that was owned by the artist.

Subject: Drawing depicts a cluster of long beaked, fantastical creatures, wearing Elizabethan collars, presenting wine and fruit. At back of the cluster is an Ariel like figure holding up a platter containing a pig's head. Most of the drawing is ink and wash with color only on the food and faces of the figures.

Title taken from caption on printed version of work. On wove paper formerly attached to a ground wood mount board which has been removed by the Conservation lab. On the verso of the mount were the following notations in pencil: '1933 / Return to [erased] A Rackham / 6 Primrose Hill Studio / NW1 /1686 ; in ink: The Tempest/no. 15 / Strange Shapes / by A Rackham'. On recto are penciled cropping marks. Signed lower rt: Arthur Rackham. Xeroxes of the removed mount are in the archival record file in the Catalog Office.
