History: Penciled note on back possibly indicates the date work was used for magazine illustration. Drawing was probably made into a woodcut as most of Stretch's portraits of this nature were.

Subject: Pencil note at top right corner on Folger copy gives quotation from Macbeth 'Stay ye imperfect speakers, tell me more'. According to Who was who in the theatre, Barnes supported Madame Ristori as leading man at Drury Lane, playing in Macbeth in 1882.
