Notes (Hamnet):
Artist: Items are here entered under John William Wright due to the bookseller's description and the labels on the verso of the backings. The drawings do somewhat resemble the work of John Massey Wright with whom John William is frequently confused and were originally cataloged under his heading. The use of color and the facial formation in some of the characters vary slightly from the majority of work attributed to John Massey Wright in the Folger collection, however in many ways the items are quite similar to that body of work. Items were formerly cataloged as the work of J.M. Wright and it is not the present intention to exclude the possibility of his authorship.

Notes (Hamnet):
Subject: Designs are incorrectly labeled on backing verso as to the plays they represent. The first item shows the characters from Twelfth night, with Malvolio looking suspiciously similar to Stothard's portrayal of him (ART Box W951.5 no.7). The second item shows the characters from Love's labour's lost, the title of the play being faintly visible in the lower right corner of the work, though it is labeled Merry wives (ART Box W951.5 no.8). The third item represents the characters from Merry wives of Windsor (ART Box W951.5 no.9).
