History: Drawings were executed for publication in consecutive issues of the Illustrated sporting and dramatic news, Jan. 5-Feb. 16, 1889. On the magazine reproductions, the name J. Swain is signed in the corner as the engraver. Ink stamps on versos of other works by Jellicoe in the FSL title Swain as 'zincographer'. The illustrations in the magazines appear to have been photographically reproduced. The Folger does not have copies of the magazines, however a separate copy of the reproduction of no.15 is housed in ART File S528ml no.99).

Subject: Works were done to illustrate Henry Irving's production of Macbeth in which Irving played the title role and Ellen Terry played Lady Macbeth. The production opened at the Lyceum Dec. 29, 1888 and ran through June of 1889.
