Condition reviewed there is a strip measuring 1.5 centimeters along the bottom edge of the picture that was originally left unpainted, as was the case with Smirke's Awakening of King Lear (no. 58). At some point after this area was filled in, the painting was annotated in the lower right corner, "T. STOTHARD RA 1801"
